Music at The Woods
Successful music graduates attest to the excellence of the programs in music available at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. The music curricula at The Woods provide a liberal arts-based education planned to prepare students as music educators, music therapists, performers and studio teachers. Students can choose one of the following degree programs:
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College also offers a Music Therapy Equivalency for women and men who have already completed a degree in music.
The music programs at The Woods are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The Music Therapy programs are approved by the American Music Therapy Association and the Music Education program is approved by the Indiana Department of Education.

Our Mission
The Music Area functions as part of the Department of Performing and Visual Arts within the liberal arts framework of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. The Music Area is dedicated to offering undergraduate and graduate degrees and programs.
Undergraduate music studies are designed to prepare students as music educators, music therapists, performers and studio teachers. A common core liberal arts music curriculum is central to all undergraduate music degree programs, and serves as excellent preparation for graduate study in music.
Graduate studies in music therapy are designed to deepen and broaden the current understanding of the therapeutic uses of music, and to prepare students for advanced areas of music therapy practice.
Music Area Goals
To meet the above goals, the Music Area offers:
- Music courses of interest and value to all students of the college, both music majors and non-music majors, to acquaint them with music as an aspect of a liberal culture.
- Instruction designed to prepare students for graduate study and for work in the field of music as music therapists, music teachers, and performers.
- The state-approved curriculum for undergraduate preparation of teachers of music in the elementary, secondary, public and private schools (Pre-School to grade 12).
- An undergraduate music therapy curriculum approved by the American Music Therapy Association, including a clinical internship, leading to eligibility to sit for the national board certification examination.
- A Music Therapy Equivalency program, leading to eligibility to sit for the national board certification examination, for persons possessing a bachelor's degree in music or in a field closely related to music therapy.
- Ensemble experiences that are varied in size and nature .
- Multiple performance opportunities (e.g. solo and ensemble experiences in convocation, concerts, recitals, applied exams).
- A graduate music therapy curriculum approved by the American Music Therapy Association designed to give professional music therapists an advanced understanding of the therapeutic uses of music.
